A Lutherville native was among the finalists announced by the One Love Foundation Wednesday for an award that celebrates selfless acts and committment on the part of Division I lacrosse players. Frankie Kelly, a junior midfielder at the University of North Carolina, is among 10 college lacrosse players up for the Yeardley Reynolds Love Unsung Hero Award, which will be presented later this month. The mother of UVA lacrosse player and Cockeysville native Yeardley Love will speak at a seminar about safety for kids headed to college.
The mother of slain Cockeysville native Yeardley Love will be the keynote speaker at an upcoming seminar focused on safety as kids transition from high school to college. Sharon Love, mother of Yeardley Love, will speak next month at the Arbutus Library Meeting Room during a seminar called "Transition to College: Be Safe" aimed at helping high school seniors and their parents with the challenges of starting college life. Both Huguely and Love, of Cockeysville, played lacrosse at the University of Virginia. A Chevy Chase man is serving his 23-year sentence for murder in western Virginia. As first reported by the AP, George Huguely V is one of about 900 inmates at Keen Mountain Correctional Center, a high security prison in Oakwood, according to the Virginia Department of Corrections website. His projected release date is May 30, 2030. In February, Huguely was convicted in the May 2010 murder of his ex-girlfriend Yeardley Love, a Cockeysville native who graduated from Notre Dame Preparatory School in Towson. As part of an initiative to speak out against domestic violence through the One Love Foundation—created in honor of the slain University of Virginia lacrosse student, Sharon and Lexi Love, Yeardley's mother and sister respectively, are slated to appear on television Thursday. Huguely was sentenced Thursday to 23 years in prison for the 2010 murder of his ex-girlfriend, Cockeysville native Yeardley Love, according to WUSA. The Chevy Chase native was also given three years supervised probation (to follow the prison sentence) and is serving one year for larceny concurrently, the television station reports. After receiving $1.2 million in donations and planning for 18 months, Notre Dame Prepatory School is unveiling a field named after slain alumna Yeardley Love. The turf field will be dedicated on Sept. 9 at 5 p.m., according to a news release from the private Catholic school for girls. The ceremony will include a blessing, readings, music and addresses from school representatives. "Yeardley was both a stand-out lacrosse player and a stand-out person," said Patricia McCarron, the school's headmistress, in the release. "This field is a beautiful reminder of her dedication as a player, student and member of the NDP community." A judge has denied a request for a new trial for George Huguely, the Chevy Chase man convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend, according to news reports. In February, Huguely was convicted of second-degree murder in the 2010 slaying of Yeardley Love, of Cockeysville, MD. Both played lacrosse at the University of Virginia. A hearing went forward in a Charlottesville courtroom Wednesday during which a Charlottesville Circuit Judge Edward Hogshire considered a defense request for a new trial.
