UPDATE (2:30 p.m.) -- There's a severe thunderstorm warning in effect until 2:45 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. The warning includes Baltimore City and Southern Baltimore County. In addition, severe storms are bringing winds of 40-50 mph to Baltimore County, including in Owings Mills, Reisterstown, Hampstead and Chester, according to an NWS special weather statement. (1:20 p.m.) A severe storm that the National Weather Service said could have produced a tornado, began passing through Pikesville at about 1:10 p.m. Sunday. More than 11,800 customers in Baltimore County lost power on Tuesday night, BGE reported.
UPDATE (12:57 a.m., Aug. 15)—A severe storm tore through Baltimore County on Tuesday night, knocking out power to thousands of residents, causing at least one lightning-related fire and sending emergency crews on nearly a dozen water rescues. Quarter-sized pieces of hail and dramatic lightning displays on the county's east side added to the storm's spectacle. Conditions capable of creating a tornado were also reported in the Bowleys Quarters/Middle River area, according to the National Weather Service. Take video or snap any photos of the storm? The wind on Ellen Avenue toppled trees and caused a gas leak and power outage, residents said.
Pam McCordell of Parkville can't quite understand what is taking the National Weather Service so long to determine if a tornado hit the Parkville area last night. The Ellen Avenue resident has no doubts about what shook the homes on her street, toppled trees and broke a gas line that forced an evacuation of her and her neighbors. "It was definitely a tornado," McCordell said. "A low roaring woke me up and before I knew it, it sounded like a freight train. I looked right out this window and saw it coming down the street."
