SPEAK OUT: Is Maryland’s Move to the Big Ten a Good Thing?

Will you miss seeing the Terps in the ACC?

The University of Maryland’s Board of Regents on Monday approved a move to the Big Ten Conference, ending nearly 60 years of affiliation with the Atlantic Coast Conference, multiple sources reported.  Rutgers is expected to announce Tuesday that it will join the Terps in the Big Ten, the New York Daily News reported.  Maryland’s move is the latest in a flurry of conference realignment that has drastically altered the landscape of college athletics in recent years, often disrupting traditional regional rivalries as schools chase increasingly lucrative television contracts. Maryland’s move, which could carry a $50 million exit penalty from the ACC, is considered to be a financial strategy that will bring the school a share of the Big Ten’s …

Naveed Sheikh could face up to five years in federal prison.

A Baltimore man faces up to five years in federal prison and millions of dollars in fines after pleading guilty Monday to distributing 1,000 copyrighted software programs, federal officials announced. In the plea agreement, Naveed Sheikh admitted conspiring to distribute more than 1,000 copies of software like Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Quicken and various operating systems using several websites, server space in Scranton, PA and at a Bel Air home between February 2003 and April 2008. Citing two sources, The Smoking Gun identifies Clash's sexual impropriety accuser as Sheldon Stephens of Harrisburg, Pa.

The Smoking Gun website has uncovered the identity of the man who accused puppeteer Kevin Clash of having an under-age sexual relationship with him. Court Upholds State Legislative Redistricting Maps

Baltimore County State Sens. Jim Brochin and Delores Kelley and two other lawsuits challenged that the maps were not legally drawn.

The state's highest court has upheld state legislative redistricting maps drawn earlier this year. The one-page ruling does state that the court "determined that the Governor’s plan is consistent with the requirements of the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of Maryland." Details behind the courts decision will be provided at a later date, according to the court ruling. Sens. Jim Brochin and Delores Kelley were involved in one of three suits against the redistricting plan on which the court heard arguments on Wednesday. The Democrats claim the new districts violate the Maryland Constitution and a 2002 Court of Appeals ruling that governs redistricting. The suit alleges that Gov. Martin O'Malley and the General Assembly…

Barack Obama Re-Elected President

President Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election.

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. The race was filled with negative campaigning on both sides, from President Obama attacking Romney’s business experience with Bain Capital to Romney lambasting Obama’s handling of the economy. The race tightened during the final months of the campaign, with gaffes and surges …

Ruppersberger Retains District 2 House Seat

The Baltimore County Democrat first claimed the seat in 2003.

U.S. Rep. C.A. "Dutch" Ruppersberger III was re-elected in the District 2 House of Representatives race, defeating challenger Nancy Jacobs, a Harford County Republican.  Ruppersberger, a Baltimore County Democrat who first won his seat in 2003, said following his reelection that it was time to pull together as Americans to address the country's most pressing needs. "We have some very serious issues, we have fiscal issues, we have debt issues, we have deficit issues, we have international issues that are very serious, terrorism issues," he said. "So we need to come together now." Although his party will remain the minority in the House of Representatives, Ruppersberger said that he would be able to work across the aisle with Republicans.
