Oxbow, a 15-1 longshot, went nearly wire-to-wire to win the 138th Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday giving trainer D. Wayne Lukas the all-time lead in Triple Crown race victories with 14. The bay colt, ridden by 50-year old Gary Stevens and owned by Calumet Farm, took the lead early from Goldencents and won the $1 million Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown by 1 ¾ lengths holding off Itsmyluckyday and Mylute in 1:57.54. The 138th running of the Baltimore tradition will be held this Saturday.
We're in the final stretch before the 138th running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. Here's what you need to know. When is it? The Triple Crown race will be held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Pimlico. NBC (WRC, WBAL) and Horse Racing Radio Network (WSPZ-AM in Washington is the only area affiliate) will have the call, which will also be streaming on the radio network's website. The first post on the day is at 10:45 a.m. Tickets? They are still available. Infield tickets are $60. Admission to the grandstand starts at $25, with box seats starting at $110. Orb won the first leg of the Triple Crown Saturday, making up major ground in the home stretch to win the Kentucky Derby.
Orb, a thoroughbred with Maryland ties, won the Kentucky Derby Saturday, setting up a potential homecoming story later this month at the Preakness. Ridden by Joel Rosario, Orb began well back in the 20-horse field, before closing very strong in the home stretch. "I was really far back," Rosario told NBC. A Lutherville native was among the finalists announced by the One Love Foundation Wednesday for an award that celebrates selfless acts and committment on the part of Division I lacrosse players. Frankie Kelly, a junior midfielder at the University of North Carolina, is among 10 college lacrosse players up for the Yeardley Reynolds Love Unsung Hero Award, which will be presented later this month. The state comptroller criticizes the president of Towson University and compares her to a movie villain.
Comptroller Peter Franchot went "Old School" on Towson University President Maravene Loeschke during a Wednesday meeting. Literally. Before calling for the resignation of Loeschke, the comptroller gave the Towson University president a political tongue lashing in absentia. Then Franchot, the Amherst graduate, dropped in a pop culture reference comparing her to the Dean Gordon "Cheese" Pritchard, head of the fictional Harrison University in the movie "Old School." A 29-year-old Ellicott City native was injured in an explosion Monday near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, the Baltimore Sun reports. Erika Brannock, who now lives in Cockeysville, was in Boston with family supporting her mother, who was expected to cross the finish line at about the time of an explosion, a friend of Brannock’s told the Sun. According to a report by The Huffington Post, 140 were injured and three dead, including an 8-year-old boy, after two explosions went off near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. President Barack Obama has called it "an act of terrorism," according to another Huffington Post report. An explosion Monday at the Boston Marathon came at the worst place at the worst time, according to a Maryland runner who has participated in the prestigious race numerous times. Mike Gimbel, who has run the Boston Marathon eight of the last 10 years, said the area of the explosion near Boylston Street is one of the most populated areas. "The majority of the fans and police are located in that area," said Gimbel. "There's 23,000 runners and everyone is there, some times 100 deep, trying to see their loved ones finishing the race.
