Community Mourns Death Of Reisterstown Volunteer Firefighter

Gene Kirchner, 25, died May 2 after being seriously injured in an April 24 fire a short distance from the volunteer fire station he grew up in.

More than 200 people lined Main Street near the Reisterstown Volunteer Fire Company Sunday to mourn the death of Firefighter Gene Kirchner. Kirchner died May 2, more than a week after sustaining injuries during a fire less than one-half mile from the station he began working in as a teen. Steven Starr, 58, died in that April 24 blaze after firefighters rescued him from the second floor of a burning three-story Victorian home in the unit block of Hanover Road. Four other residents of building escaped unharmed. Kirchner, 25, began his career with the Reisterstown Volunteer Fire Company when he was only 14. Funeral Procession Set Sunday through Owings Mills, Stevenson, Lutherville-Timonium

Reisterstown Volunteer Fire Company Firefighter Gene Kirchner's funeral procession will begin at Har Sinai Congregation in Owings Mills, and head east, affecting Greenspring Avenue, Broadway, Falls and Padonia roads.

Firefighter Gene Kirchner's funeral is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday at Har Sinai Congregation in Owings Mills. And some roadways will be affected, beginning at 11:30 a.m. At 11:30 a.m., Walnut Avenue will be closed between Greenspring and Park Heights avenues. It will reopen after the funeral procession has left the synagogue, according to a news release from Baltimore County police. However, police will be on hand to help people who reside on Walnut, the release states. Also, the procession route to Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens will: Begin at Har Sinai, located at 2905 Walnut Ave., taking a right on Walnut Ave., a right on Greenspring Ave., to Broadway. 1 Dead, 1 Arrested After Double Shooting

Baltimore County police say James Townsend, 33, died Wednesday of medical complications from the shooting Saturday. Another man has been charged.

One man is dead and another has been charged following a double shooting Saturday in Lansdowne. James Townsend, 33, died Monday from complications due to the shooting, according to a Baltimore County police news release. His death was ruled a homicide on Thursday, according to the State Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Police said Brian Shepperd, 20, has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and other charges following the shooting, which happened around 10 p.m. Saturday in the 2900 block of Bero Road. "Two men were standing in front of a home when the suspects approached them and began shooting," according to the release. "The victims tried to flee, but were shot multiple times each," the release stated. Both were taken to …

McDonough Calls For Firing Of State Prisons Head

The Middle River Republican wants Gary Maynard "fired two weeks ago" and Gov Martin O'Malley to call in the FBI to investigate gang problems in state correctional facilities.

The head of the state prison system should be fired after federal indictments of 25 guards and inmates were made public last week, according to Del. Pat McDonough. "Gary Maynard should be fired, like two weeks ago," McDonough, a Middle River Republican, said. "This has been going on for years. It's widespread and it's institutional." Raquel Guillory, a spokeswoman for the governor, said O'Malley "has repeatedly expressed confidence in Secretary Maynard." Earlier this week, O'Malley called the indictments a positive development in the fight against gangs, according to a WMAR television report. The governor praised Maynard during a May 1 Board of Public Works meeting. "You do good work rooting out corruption," O'Malley told Maynard. The …

Chief: Gene Kirchner Was Searching for Man Trapped in Fire

The volunteer firefighter who was was critically injured during the April 24 fire in Reisterstown died Thursday at Maryland Shock Trauma. His funeral is set for Sunday.

It was a horrific fire April 24 that the Reisterstown Volunteer Fire Company was called to control. Volunteer firefighter Gene Kirchner, 25, and several others were searching the home at 19 Hanover Rd., trying to find a resident because "very, very agitated residents were screaming that someone was trapped," Baltimore County Fire Chief John Hohman said during a press conference Thursday afternoon. "Gene and others, they attempted to rescue the individual," Hohman said, calling the fire "horrific." Kirchner, a nine-year veteran of the company, died on Thursday at Maryland Shock Trauma after spending eight days in critical condition. UPDATE (2:30 p.m.)--Volunteer Firefighter Gene Kirchner died Thursday afternoon at Maryland Shock Trauma, according to the Baltimore County Fire Department. The member of the Reisterstown Volunteer Fire company was critically injured April 24 while doing a search during a house fire at 19 Hanover Rd in Reisterstown. "It is with deep sorrow and regret that the Reisterstown Volunteer Fire Company announces the line of duty passing of Firefighter Gene Kirchner," according to a statement from the fire company. "Gene succumbed to his injures after an 8-day fight." Gene was a 9-year member of the fire company, and was a junior firefighter for 2 years, it states. Body in Pool Was Man Missing from Group Home

James White, 64, went missing from a group home in February, and his body was found April 28.

The death of a man whose body was found in a pool Sunday has been ruled accidental. The state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has identified the man found as James White, 64, who went missing from a group home Feb. 26, according to police. He was found less than a mile away from his group home. "The cause of death is listed as drowning complicated by hypothermia," the release states. "There are no signs of foul play, and no criminal charges will be filed." The pool in which he was found is located in the 8600 block of McDonogh Road in Owings Mills. Crime Down In Baltimore County In 2012

Crime dropped in nine of 10 precincts in the county but increased in Towson. Rapes and some arson, robbery and assault cases also increase.

Baltimore County was a little safer in 2012, according to crime statistics released Wednesday by the Baltimore County Police Department. Baltimore County Police Chief Jim Johnson Wednesday said all crime in Baltimore County decreased 6.7 percent compared to the previous five year average. Violent crime including homicides decreased by 11.1 percent in the same period. "These are some of the best numbers I've seen in my career," Johnson said. "You have to go back 30 years to find crime numbers this low," Johnson said. Norris Recovering Following Motorcycle Injuries

The radio host and former Baltimore City and state police chief was injured after he swerved to avoid a truck last week.

Radio personality and former state and Baltimore City police chief Ed Norris is recuperating at home from serious injuries sustained last week in the crash of his motorcycle in rural Harford County. The Aegis reports Steve Davis, Norris' co-host on the morning show on 105.7-FM The Fan, told listeners Monday that the Hampstead resident would be out at least through the end of the week. Norris, 53, was injured April 24 when he swerved while attempting to avoid a truck that was making a left turn from Maryland Route 161 onto southbound Route 1. Allegedly, the truck's driver did not yield right of way. Norris was flown to shock trauma in Baltimore with serious injuries.
