Winning numbers in Saturday's drawing could net a $600 million prize.
The jackpot in Saturday's Powerball drawing has been raised to a game-record $600 million, Maryland Lottery officials announced Friday. The increase, fueled by ticket sales, is the second in as many days. The cash option for the new prize is $376.9 million. The prize, if awarded Saturday, would be the second largest jackpot prize in history, behind a $656 million Mega Millions jackpot awarded last year. One of the winning tickets nationwide was sold at a 7-Eleven in Milford Mill. The drawing will be aired live locally on WBAL-TV at 11:22 p.m. Saturday. The jackpot has "rolled" (that is, no ticket has had the full winning numbers) 13 times since April, according to lottery officials. Powerball's previous record jackpot was $587 million, won…
The Marchex Institute says Maryland may have raised cursing to an art form. What the #@%*?
What's so great about being nice? Nice never got anybody anywhere, right? According to a finding from the Marchex Institute, those are some questions Marylanders might ask themselves considering the institute's recent findings: We curse and act impolitely on consumer telephone calls. Whether that says anything about Marylanders as a people is between you and your robocaller, but it's statistically true, according to the institute - only Ohio had more cursing measured on more than 600,000 phone calls from the past 12 months. Virginia, our neighbor to the south, on the other hand, was fifth for most courteous. Marchex released the findings just in time for National Etiquette Week, monitoring calls placed by consumers to businesses across…

Council correction of a $100,000 math error represents the smallest budget reduction in the last three years.
The Baltimore County Council Thursday took a little off the top of County Executive Kevin Kamenetz's third budget. The council cut just $100,000 from Kamenetz's proposed $2.8 billion spending plan for the budget year that begins July 1. That plan includes nearly $1.7 billion in general fund spending paid for with county property and piggyback income taxes. "It's a fiscally prudent budget," Council Chairman Tom Quirk, a Catonsville Democrat, said, explaining that the small reduction taken by the council was a reflection of the weakened economy and sluggish property tax receipts. "There really wasn't a lot to trim," Quirk said. "It's all muscle and bone." The proposed budget contains no furloughs or layoffs and no property or income tax …
Baltimore County police are investigating heat-exhaustion as a possible cause of the illnesses.
Pinewood Elementary School was evacuated Thursday afternoon after students reported feeling "light-headed," as if they were going to faint. Baltimore County emergency crews responded to a call from the school at 3:21 p.m., near the end of the school day, said Julia Hardgrove, a police and fire spokeswoman. Those who reported illness were at the school's cafeteria. Hardgrove said 11 students and an adult were transported to area hospitals for treatment. A cause for the illnesses have not been determined, but police are considering heat-exhaustion as a possibility. The school does have air conditioning, but police and school officials are investigating whether the system was working properly. Mychael Dickerson, a Baltimore County Public …
The prize is the third largest in American history, according to lottery officials.
The Powerball jackpot for Saturday's drawing has been raised to become what would be the third-largest jackpot prize in American history. Due to strong sales, the jackpot for Saturday was raised from $475 million to $550 million, with a $350.1 million cash option. It is the second largest prize in Powerball's history. No ticket has had the winning numbers for the past 13 drawings—since early April, according to a Maryland Lottery press release. Maryland has had two winning Powerball tickets since the Maryland Lottery joined the game in 2010. One was a Pennsylvania couple who purchased a ticket in Elkton on Christmas Eve in 2011 that won them $128.8 million. That September, an Abingdon couple won $108.8 million, according to the release. …
