Ten Places To Volunteer This Holiday Season

Check out the volunteer opportunities available in our community and the surrounding areas.

Like mama always said, it's just as important to give as to receive. Spend some time giving back to our community by connecting with one or more of these organizations.

1. Cockeysville Public Library

The library has multiple special programs requiring volunteer assistance including conducting story times for young readers, preserving collections of photos, digital imagery and community outreach.

2. Leukemia Lymphoma Society

The Maryland chapter of this organization needs help with general office work and advocacy. For volunteers who enjoy running, there are Team In Training groups at every chapter promoting and assisting in the completion of a half-marathon or marathon.

3. Alzheimer's Association

Another active organization, the Alzheimer's Association conducts a memory walk to honor those suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Prospective volunteers can also contact the Timonium office at (410)-561-9099 for more opportunities.

4. St. Vincent's Center

St. Vincent's, part of Catholic Charities of Baltimore, is a home for children ages 3-13 suffering from emotional or behavioral issues. There are several options available to work with these children, some of whom can no longer live at home for fear of abuse or neglect.

5. Project Linus

This organization asks volunteers to serve as "blanketeers" by providing ill or traumatized children with a homemade blanket.

6. Fire Museum of Maryland

This Fire Museum of Maryland invites volunteers to do anything from development and fundraising to cleaning and arranging collections.

7. Villa Maria

Another organization supported by the Catholic Charities of Baltimore, Villa Maria helps neglected children get the attention and love they need. Volunteer through the site to see what you can do to help.

8. Cockeysville Volunteer Fire Company

If you want to commit yourself to a long-term community project, consider becoming a member of the volunteer fire company. Different memberships include becoming a regular member, or just supporting a member through donations or fundraisers.

9. Susan G. Komen

Most residents in the Hunt Valley area are aware of the annual crowd that gathers to participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 5K. But the popular breast cancer awareness organization has needs throughout the year ranging from clerical support to representing the organization at health fairs.

10. Gallagher Services

Gallagher Services is yet another organization that falls under the Catholic Charities of Baltimore. Serving people with developmental disabilities, Gallagher can use any type of volunteer from students to families who would be willing to participate in community groups, service learning and much more.
