Shake Off the Winter Blues at the Green Spring Valley Point to Point

Event marks start of the Baltimore County steeplechase season.

There’s no better way to kick off spring than spending the day watching horses run with friends, family and a picnic basket at the annual Green Spring Valley Point to Point.

While the weather in the early morning hours is expected to be cold with a chance of a mix of rain and snow, temperatures are expected to rise up to 53 degrees, presenting better conditions to enjoy the races. To be on the safe side, you should bring warm, comfortable clothing and blankets.

The Green Spring Valley Hounds have hosted this event at Shawan Downs for the past 11 years. It features child, novice and seasoned riders competing in nine timber and flat races. Many of these competitors are warming up for the bigger races in April: My Lady’s Manor, the Maryland Grand National and the Maryland Hunt Cup.

Attendants will assist you with parking after you arrive at the Shawan Downs property through the Falls Road entrance.

Beverages, sandwiches, soups and other snacks will be provided throughout the day by Filling Station, a local coffee shop, which will have a stand set up on the field. But you are encouraged to bring your own food items as well.

Feel free to entertain the kids with Frisbees, balls and other toys. However kites and anything else that may land on the racecourses are prohibited. Dogs on leashes are also welcome.

Be sure to wear comfortable shoes as you may end up doing a lot of walking. If you want to avoid that, having a few camp chairs on hand isn’t a bad idea.

For more information, check out the Shawan Downs website.

You don't have to be a horse fan to enjoy the day and the thrill of watching the riders tearing down the final stretch.
