Glenelg Ends Hereford's 28-Game Winning Streak

The Glenelg Gladiators beat the Hereford Bulls, 6-5.

Glenelg High School's John Milani scored the game-winning second goal with just over four minutes left in a come-from-behind, 6-5, boys lacrosse upset of the Hereford High School, ending Hereford's 28-game winning streak, in Saturday's Gerry Case Memorial Tournament at Broadneck High School.

Milani's effort completed a four-goal run that erased a 5-2 deficit, Mikey Wynne also scored twice with an assist, and Scott Dziwulski and Glenn Lucas scored once each for the Glenelg Gladiators.

Senior goalie teammate, Eric Sweetman, registered 13 saves the as the Gladiators (9-1) earned their ninth straight win while also ending a  28-game winning streak by the Bulls (11-1).

Zach Wheeler had an assist for the Gladiators, a Class 2A-1A program which had lost its March 22, season-opener, 11-8, to Fallston (9-2) of Harford County, which then dropped its next game, 7-6, to the Bulls on March 25.

Defensively, the Gladiators quieted the Hereford Bulls' top scoring attackman, Tyler Dimes, primarily by using senior Austin McWephy against him, said Gladiators' coach Josh Hatmaker.

"Austin is a position defender who reacts well to what you do, and Tyler Dimes is such a good attackman. So this is definitely a great accomplishment against a great team," said Hatmaker. "If we had kept them under 10 goals, I would have been happy because I was concerned about their depth."

Fallston High School had been the last team to defeat Hereford, doing so by 8-7 during last season only to lose their rematch in last year's regional tournament.

"We probably out-shot them for the game, but we couldn't finish. Plus they have a great goalie and they had a good game plan," said Bulls' coach Brian King.

"With the streak building, you know, maybe our guys were getting a little bit complacent," said King. "But I have a lot of faith in the character of the kids in our program to come back to practice on Monday and to be ready to clean things up."

Led by Joe Seider with three goals, and Tim Gunn and Morgan Pritchett with one goal each, the Bulls had come off of Saturday's semifinal, 8-2, win over the host Bruins, and the Gladiators, a semifinal, 7-4, triumph over Urbana of Frederick County.

Broadneck defeated Urbana, 17-8, in the consolation game.

Hatmaker also credited the play of defenders Brendan McMahon, Nick Gillette, Drew Dziwulski and defensive midfielder Christian Salandra.

"They run two lines of midfielders and we run basically four or five kids and that's it," said Hatmaker. "I think that our defense made them uncomfortable. I think it was just one of those games where we just played really well, and this will make us better in the playoffs."
