Kach Announces County Council Campaign

The 10-term Republican state delegate will challenge First-term incumbent Todd Huff in the 2014 primary election.

State Del. Wade Kach Tuesday announced he will challenge fellow Republican Todd Huff for the 3rd District seat on the Baltimore County Council.

Kach made the announcement on his Facebook page.

“When I look at the 3rd District, I see a need for an experienced, tested legislator to deal with the challenges we face,” Kach wrote on his Facebook page. “I believe that by moving from the House of Delegates to the County Council, I can bring the kind of responsive public service that the citizens want and need.”

Kach was expected to make the announcement. In March he said he was considering the campaign.

Sources who know Kach said the delegate began to consider the race in February after Huff was arrested on drunken driving charges. Huff pleaded guilty to those charges last month and was given a one year suspended jail sentence and 24 months of supervised probation.

Kach almost ran for the same seat nearly 10 years ago.

Some legislators said in March that Kach's decision to leave the House of Delegates may also have something to do with his vote on same-sex marriage.

Last year, Kach shocked many Republicans by changing his vote. Boteler himself warned that the vote might be politically damaging in a Republican district.

"I told him I don't think this district will be very happy about his vote for the gay marriage legislation," Republican Del. Joseph Boteler said in a Feb. 2012 interview.

Kach is not the only candidate to challenge Huff for the 3rd District council seat.

Laurie Taylor-Mitchell, a Towson education activist and a Democrat, is also expected to run for the seat.
