(Updated 11:49 a.m.) A man who police say refused to drop a knife was shot and killed by Baltimore County police during a standoff Saturday night in Cockeysville.

The man, identified later as 49-year-old James Robert Rogers Jr., was hospitalized and died early Sunday at an area hospital.

Police responded at 9:33 p.m. Saturday to a home the 10100 block of Daventry Drive in Cockeysville for a reported assault, according to a police news release. Someone told a 911 operator that a man was threatening people with a knife.

Police confronted the man. When he would not drop the knife, an officer shot him at least once, according to police.

The officer involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative duty as officials investigate the incident, police said.
