Volunteers Sought for Kindergarten Classrooms

Interested people would need to commit a few hours a week.

Baltimore County's public elementary schools need kindergarten classroom volunteers for the 2012-2013 school year.

Volunteers will receive training and are asked to commit a few hours a week, according to a county news release. Previous experience is not required.

Interested people can call (410)-887-2715 or email volunteers@baltimorecountymd.gov for more information.

It is always good to have volunteers, but I also know some great young people who have just graduated with degrees in elementary education and are fully certified - It sure would be nice if they could turn into fully employed tax-payers!

I think the point here is a need for part time volunteers which is a different budget item from paid employment. It would be great to employ recent grads, but that is a budget issue. Volunteers are unpaid and also bring a wide variety of experience to the classroom. Plus volunteers are needed for support and not all day every day. I think I just convinced myself to look into this opportunity.

Are they doing away with the paid kindergarten assistants?

Is this for seniors, only? i called a couple of years ago and that's what I was told.

Lynn,
Did you ask specifically about kindergarten classes? Those are the only ones with openings. I didn't hear about any age restrictions.

Maybe if they would have cut the salary of those 2 people reassigned then they would have the money to pay Instructional assistants to work in the kindergarten classes!! Mr. Dance is not starting on a good note..

They still have paid assistants (I got hired on as one this year), but they are only allotted for 2 hrs. a day. Kindergarten really needs as close to all day help as they can get, especially in the beginning of the year, when the little ones are adjusting to something that is completely new to a lot of them.
