The current practice is that the Board of Education receives appointment recommendations from the superintendent. Once approved, the superintendent and the school system's Department of Human Resources negotiate employment terms such as possible contracts.

said he told Dance that the board needs more information about future appointments including educational background, work experience, position duties, salary, benefits and whether the employee would receive a contract.

He noted that in case of —who is now working as a — the board was unaware that she had a contract.

The Board of Education president said Dance agreed with the idea.

In a statement to Patch, Charles Herndon, a spokesman for the school system, wrote that moving forward, the superintendent would include salary and benefits information in the paperwork that is presented to the board whenever there is a new appointment recommendation.

Schmidt and Herndon confirmed that the school system and the board are considering drafting a standardized contract for all senior level administrators for the board's consideration.

"If the decision is made that senior staff folks should have contracts, we'll start with the base contract and look at tailoring it to each person," Schmidt said.
