Mark Elmore: "We waved and yelled 'howdy' to one another every day when I rode by on my bike. I looked forward to it at the top of the big hill—my reward for [a] hard climb. The friendly acknowledgement from someone whose name I didn't know, but whose warm welcome I could always count on. I will miss you."

Sheila Saunders: "I am very, very sad over Smitty's death. I met my husband in his barbershop years ago. He cut my husband, son, brothers, nephew's and my mom's hair. He danced at my wedding and we all laughed and enjoyed him so much. We will miss him dearly."
