BGE Seeks Rate Hike

The utilities company cited a need to make essential upgrades to its gas and electric services.

Following the recent severe "derecho" that left many Baltimore County residents , Baltimore Gas and Electric is looking to raise its rates.

In a Friday statement, the utilities company announced that it filed with the Maryland Public Service Commission to increase its rates for gas and electric services for both residential and commercial customers.

According to BGE, the typical residential gas bill would increase by $4.62 a month and the typical electric bill would increase by $7.22. The company said this would amount to a 4.4 percent increase in total electric bills and 6.6 percent in total electric bills across all customer classes.

"We realize that any increase in our electricity and gas distribution rates can be a burden for our customers, particularly given today’s difficult economic times," said Kenneth W. DeFontes Jr., president and chief executive officer of BGE in the release. "The adjustments we have requested position BGE to continue to make essential upgrades, with an emphasis on modernizing our infrastructure for enhanced reliability and safety."

BGE reminds customers that they can better manage their bills through the company's BGE Smart Energy Savers Program.

FIFA You might want to read about the process of and life at that time.Natural rights are rights not contingent upon the laws.Nature has its own process

Tim ,I'm sorry, I was totally wrong , I read your post about Erlich to fast .That blaming of Erlich for this got O'Malley in office .Funniest part is his biggest supporters were served by PEPCO. They didn't even get brought up back then . People really do have to understand that BGE is ONLY allowed to make a set profit ,set by PSC ,if they need capital repairs and infrastructure they must raise rates , There isn't any millionaires running BGE.I know you won't believe that and that is okay ,after the brain washing O'Malley did and the recent CRAZY events ,Snow maggeddon, Irene and who the hell ever heard of a Drecchio ? I know we never did as BGE employees. Hey just remember 4 out of 10 employees who were working during that storm didn't have power at their own homes for at least half that storm. And BGE can only charge $1.00 per event for the first 24 hours per resident . Again why intelligent people can't understand that if the meter isn't spinning we aren't making ANY money , Why we wouldn't want to be up and running 100% during one of Maryland Hottest weeks doesn't make sense. Look at India or even worse look at your fellow Marylander s served by PEPCO.
Joe July 30, 2012 at 07:29 PM
Gloria, if you MUST HAVE electric you better not rely on anyone but yourself. To rely on others when it IS your responsibility is foolish and folly. YOU are responsible for YOU and not BGE.
Joe July 30, 2012 at 07:31 PM
Owe'Malley is responsible for more tax rate and fee increases in this state than the previous 3 governors combined.

They had a vision, and knowledge of nature! Nature of land, farming and the process nature’s in human nature. Natural and legal rights just look this over this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_and_legal_rights . Just don't twist republic/Republican to its current use. Republican is a individual of Republic of the people. We have gone from “republic” that everyday and common sense we are all given at birth is used by HU”mans” being equal. Civil war we went to a democracy of a Representative of choice. One who rules by himself of what he thinks what people wants-not what is in needed by the people. Then the next process in the state we are in Authoritarianism Authoritarianism emphasizes arbitrary law rather than the rule of law, Authoritarian political systems may be weakened through "inadequate performance to demands of the people (select group of officials behind closed doors) sounds familiar? What going on today So what is next “despotism” has been applied pejoratively to a person, particularly a head of state or government, who abuses their power and authority to oppress their people, subjects or subordinates. “”Most want to return to a republic””. 1776 was the "beginning of vision they had of America" I hope this enlightened your thoughts. But maybe that thing about how they treated women ?That came from the vision these men had. Nature takes its time

O'Malley has nothing to do with it. blam the bge ceo. i bet there is never a power outage at his house. i agree with freddy give me a guarantee 30 min. response and i will pay the extra fees no problem. but in the mean time i want a credit on my bill for every second i am with out.

FIFA would you kindly explain what you meant by: ..........Short version Crier, slaves are great and women in the kitchen barefoot and pregnant with their mouths shut, thank you for clarifying your views. 1776 sounds great! If your trying to thro the race card? Or you don't know history? Same process happened in Roma when it was a Republic and the same thing is happening again to this has been Republic.
FIFA July 31, 2012 at 12:31 AM
Ah Crier, the ole race card throw in. Slavery had nothing to do with race in 1776, it had to do with power over others who happened to be black. My entire point is that all of those who want to go back to the good ole founding fathers leave out the misery they inflicted on women and slaves. Why did you bring out the race card?
FIFA July 31, 2012 at 12:32 AM
PS Crier, aka sarcasm.
Arbutus Town Crier July 31, 2012 at 12:49 AM
FIFA, I thought you brought it up with your comment, I did not mention anything about race, pure history...... Its hard to pick up sarcasm in here. ok so we are on the same page. a Republic of the people, not aristocrats that don't abide by the same laws and should receive equal justice of the blue collar.
FIFA July 31, 2012 at 12:54 AM
Crier, we are agreed.
Mike Fisher July 31, 2012 at 12:54 AM
lol, Yeah FIFA, that's what we want. We want slavery, prejudice and women without voting rights. Really? We got rid of things that became outdated or immoral such as the things you mentioned, but the Constitution is the building block. What's the point making amendments to the Constitution if the amendments violate the document being amended? Your response was a bit of an exaggeration and by the way, if we aren't using the Constitution as a foundation for lawmaking, what are they using? Selfish ambitions? Greed? Yeah, I'd rather have the Constitution as the building block which it hasn't been for years. The founding documents were for the people and we don't matter to them anymore than those documents do. Worse part is, no one really seems to care or notice. It's runaway corruption.
FIFA July 31, 2012 at 01:01 AM
Mike, perhaps you missed my sarcasm? I look at the constitution not as a bible, which is a whole different discussion, but as a footer of a house. The framers had no idea of nuclear weapons let alone a country of 300 million people with issues they could not even begin to comprehend. Their rifles fired one musket ball at a time and we have murderers with 100 round magazines fring as fast as they can pull the trigger? The corruption in our politics is in the money. Hundreds of millions of dollars to sway elections without even knowing who is paying the bill. It will destroy the Republic. Might take awhile, but it will happen..
Mike Fisher July 31, 2012 at 01:03 AM
Indeed, my bad. Missed the sarcasm. I agree, though, and that destruction, I fear, is closer than most people think. I hope that isn't the case, though.
FIFA July 31, 2012 at 01:09 AM
Enough said, agreed. Night.

Could someone honestly answer one thing ,What could BGE do? That drecchio and many Baltimoreans know this, there weren't trees just down across wires there were trees from the house two doors up blown down on top of your wires in area of Towson,Dundalk and Parkville many trees totally healthy didn't fall straight down they snapped in half and blew twenty feet ensnaring lines. No one would EVER touched those trees in a trimming process because you wouldn't possibly think that would happen. We just lived through probably (hopefully)a once in a lifetime storm, instead of being honest about the fury of nature everyone blames BGE. Hey I'm an employee ,I would have told you, you were crazy if you tried to clear some of the damage I saw.I would accused us of being a totally environmental unfriendly ,profit grabbing monopoly.Because like most BGE employees I live in the neighborhoods that were slammed beyond belief. As a citizen I have to admit after the snow blizzards ,Irene ,then this BGE should do more .But after working through all of them and wanting my neighborhood as shady green as possible I REALLY would have been pissed if they cut down the trees that these events knocked down and we never had those events. It'll take 20 years to bury all lines, how long before they get to your neighborhood ?You going to want extra $200.00 a month on your bill and they don't even get to your neighborhood in your lifetime? Sorry Felt like it was time someone from the OTHER side Ranted!
Mike Fisher July 31, 2012 at 08:07 PM
Then, the process of burying all lines should have started a long time ago. The answer is natural energy, particularly the sun and the wind. That's what I want. You guys want to let overgrown trees grow into and around power lines significantly increasing the risk of power outages for their customers and you say it'll take 20 years to bury all the lines, then it's time for alternative energy, not BGE or nuclear power or anything of the sort. We already HAVE unlimited sources of energy and during storms, wind turbines wouldn't fail, you'd get more than enough power. We have the technology to be BEYOND what BGE offers us for electricity to power our homes and businesses and we SHOULD be beyond it and, IMO, need to be. It's time to move on to more reliable sources of energy, then you can keep all your trees and who cares if a 20mph gust of wind on a sunny day snaps a large tree branch in half and it knocks out power to customers for 12 hours. Grid power should be backup power. We have unlimited sources of clean energy, we should be using them.
MS August 02, 2012 at 03:08 PM
BGE's request for a rate increase is for distribution charges. BGE already raised the price they charge for the energy they deliver. BGE's price for residential electricity supply is now 21 percent above competitive market prices and their price for natural gas supply, which BGE raised on Aug 1, is now 7.5% above market. You can choose the energy company that supplies electricity and natural gas to you through BGE and get your energy at a lower price. BGE delivers it, but you pay less for it. Here are the numbers - BGE now charges residential (schedule R) customers 9.862 cents per kWh for the electricity supply portion of their service. Washington Gas Energy Services (WGES) will supply electricity through BGE to you for 7.8 cents per kWh. The same for natural gas - BGE's current price for natural gas supply is 56.22 cents per therm. WGES will supply natural gas through BGE to you for 51 cents per therm. To see your price options, go to www.wges.com . To get WGES' promotional pricing, you need to enter a promotional code. Here it is. Where it asks "New to WGES? Enter your promo code here" enter code " EAHOME-EA1016 ". The code will get you WGES' promotional pricing. If you enroll your BGE accounts with WGES, BGE will continue to deliver your electricity and natural gas as always, respond to issues, and handle the billing as before. But you will pay less for it. There is no service interruption. Nothing is connected or disconnected.
Anneka Jameson August 02, 2012 at 03:20 PM
Absolutely! I really don't understand why BGE demands that I pay them for not rendering the service that I pay them to render.
