New Classes and Programs Introduced at the Myerberg Center

Beginning this September, the Edward A. Myerberg Center will introduce dozens of new educational and recreational classes, cultural programs and trips for adults 55 years and over. The new offerings will enhance the Center’s programming designed to engage members of the community through lifelong learning, physical and mental health, and social enrichment.

New activities being introduced this fall:

Expanded educational and cultural programs include a cooking series using ingredients from the fall’s bounty, beginning French and workshops on digital photography and social media. The Center offers over 25 classes, seminars and education programs covering writing, current events, book clubs, mahjong and computer tips.

The Encore Chorale invites experienced vocalists and new singers to join the nation’s largest choral program for older adults. Weekly practices will be held beginning this fall leading up to two large, free community concerts at the Gordon Center in Owings Mills, MD, and the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.

The Center’s newest MasterClass series will feature classes on Broadway composer Leonard Bernstein, an historical study of the Normandy Invasion and the timeless classics of the American pop music songbook. These college-level courses are led by university or college professors.

New Fitness Classes are available for Myerberg members of all skill levels. These programs include circuit training, Pilates, Zumba and targeted body workouts.

The Myerberg’s Dorothy Orfus Stein Art Program is also introducing new programs, such as silk painting, portraiture and advanced drawing classes. Aspiring and seasoned artists can now participate in a variety of fine and visual art classes, all taught by noted artists and art educators. Works will be on display during the fall Student-Faculty Art Exhibit Opening.

Special programs and events have been added to the Myerberg’s fall schedule to provide social interaction and exciting experiences. For example, Center members are invited to model in a fall fashion show and an event in which grandchildren will join their grandparents for a spirited Sunday morning as a local author reads from his children’s book.

All new activities are not only held at the Center: Participants can tour Baltimore’s two sports stadiums or spend a day shopping at the Sugarloaf Crafts Festival in Gaithersburg, MD. In addition, they can hike along the trail at Park School’s beautiful campus.

New groups are always forming at the Myerberg Center. This fall will be the first gathering of the Bagel Boys Men’s Club for a literature discussion and presentation. Groups will also get together to watch classic cinema and episodes of Downton Abbey.

Myerberg Center provides over 125 programs each year for 1,000 members ages 55 and over, including classes in the fine arts, literature, current events, new technologies and fitness. The Center’s Eating Together program serves 12,000 meals a year to seniors.
