'Suspicious Subject' Shot, Killed by Police in Dundalk

Baltimore County Police Homicide Detectives are investigating the incident.

Two Baltimore County police officers are on administrative leave after a police involved shooting left one man dead in Dundalk early Sunday morning.

Officers responded to Seaside Road and Dunmanway at about 2:15 a.m. on Sept. 23 to investigate a "suspicious subject," Lt. Robert McCullough stated in a press release.

"The officers were attempting to interview the subject when he became combative. The subject then suddenly attempted to take one of the officer's firearm. Fearing for the officers' safety, a second officer pulled out his firearm and shot the subject," McCullough stated.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene by Baltimore County Fire Department paramedics, according to the release.

McCullough described the two officers involved as veterans of the police department. Pending an investigation by Baltimore County Police Homicide detectives, the officers have been placed on administrative leave, the release stated.

No further details were released as of 9 a.m. Sunday.

The young man was in the military. Was going to be married in November. Was on weekend leave. Don't know why he was there or for what. Know his family in Galveston, Texas. Don't be so quick to judge till the facts come out. Sometimes we can be at the wrong place at the wrong time and do something stupid. My brother is a cop and sometime decissions have to be made in a split second wether they are right or wrong only those who are there really know.

Well, it's sad that someone who is trained in military tactics doesn't know that reaching for an officer's gun is going to get you shot. C'mon, that's just common sense. I don't blame the officer one bit for firing. So far, the facts say this person fought the police and tried to take the officer's gun and was shot. Based on those facts, the shooting was justified. Comply completely and he'd be alive.

There's nothing wrong with people getting shot...as long as the right people get shot as it sounds like happened in this case.

To Callahan, it is never a good thing for someones life to be taken. Especially if that person already sacrificed to defend your freedom to make idiotic comments like that. I know this man and you should learn to respect the dead no matter who the are because they have family and friends that care about them just like you.

I also sacrificed to defend my country in time of war but that wouldn't excuse me from resisting arrest and trying to take a police officer's gun. I would deserve to be shot as well if I did so. If he was in the service then he is a disgrace to the uniform.

Hmmm...Guy in the military should damn sure know how to respect authority be it a military superior or an officer of the law. If he was such an innocent babe in the woods, what was he even doing out and awake at 2:00 a.m.? I mean I'm no party guy but the last time I was up at 2:00 a.m. to do anything I was on duty with the Military Police in 1972. Sorry, but I believe that this guy was up to no good and he just plain got caught and thought he could fight his way out of it, possibly killing one or more policemen. As I said earlier, there's nothing wrong with people getting shot...as long as the right people get shot. And it sure sounds to me like the police got it right, again, this time. I'm sorry that his dear Mom, Dad, friends and other family members have to suffer the loss of this guy, but let's get it right. His actions were the proximate cause of the whole thing. Mess around with the police at 2:00 a.m. and God only knows what will happen. To quote a popular wrassler, James Storm, "Sorry about your damn luck."

What did the guy do that was wrong....be suspicious?...what law was broken to cause them to attempt to apprehend him?

Well Buck, if the police had a complaint of suspicious persons in the area checking out vehicles, that's their probable cause to stop and interview the suspicious person. Obviously this encounter went south from there.

Buck and I agree on very little. However, whenever an unarmed "suspicious" person is shot and killed by police, I become suspicious.

There are actually articles about baltimore pd in similar case where they escilate a situation to the point of murder, not defense. An off duty baltimore pd shot another service member because he "thought" he was in danger. The marine had no idea the man was a cop and was trying to defend the girls he was with. The cop drew his gun on the group with no cause. The officer was found guilty of manslaughter and is now serving time.

So youre just ignorant. He did not know anyone in that area. His was taking another serviceman to see his sister for her birthday. Where is the group of men that he was supposedly with. Have you seen the outside of your own ass in a while. Clearly you have no heart sir and will be judged at the gates

It seems the guy "matched the description" of those [one of a group] involved with stolen property and upon questioning, he was "combative." Why didn't he just cooperate if he did not do it? You know, like hand over the backpack to be searched, peacefully? Grabbing for the officers gun is... like urinating into a hurricane! It's an unfortunately avoidable decision the deceased made...he should have thought about his loved ones and how they would be hurt by his [at that time] potential absence.

Maybe the cop should have aimed for the big toe. That would have stopped him and hurt this innocent man even less. (Sarcasm).

Scott, center mass is the only target when your life is at risk. Only a cop not concerned about going home to his family would shoot for a leg.

All of you ignorant and foolist people Harry, Gomer and Perry you three have been put in place on the other article. As for the rest of you, your police department is in question, they run down 17yr old high school football players. because a few kids were being mischievous and throwing rocks yes I know its wrong but when they hit a cops house did that give him the the right to beat that 17 yr old to death NO!!!! am I judging no do I have the FACTS NO did I READ an ARTICLE YES and I feel and hurt for the familyjust has I do for the Lopez family. So dont you dare judge Josh he was a good kid doing a good deed for his friend, you ask what he was doing out at 2am in the morning he was trying to make it back to his ship so he would not be late for work. As for the stolen thinks in his backpack that will be explain soon because because you see Josh was buried yesterday with FULL MILITARY HONORS what does that mean you ask I'll tell you the NCIS is doing their oun investigation....... you all will see you should never judge any one just by an article.

So are you saying he did have stolen items in his back pack? BTW, as disgraceful as it is, plenty of criminals have been buried with full military honors in the past.
One would think a serviceman would respect authority and cooperate with Police Officers. Why didn't he let them question him? Why didn't he let them search his bag? Why did he resist arrest? Could it be that because he was a serviceman he would be in deep s#!+ if he caught with stolen property and thought his best chance was to try to avoid arrest? Did you ever consider that possibility?
And how was I put in my place in the other article?

Theresa

9:58 pm on Tuesday, October 2, 2012

Gomer, Let me be clear I saying he had stolen anything I was referring to the other Article that said he had stolen thinks in his backpack. The Lopez family nkew what was in the backpack like I said it will come out in the investigation. He was not being arrested dont know were you heard that. how do you know he didn't let them search his bag? how do you know he did'nt answer their question and they didn't like the answer, and they got rough him?did you ever consider that possibility. no you are judging him before you can hear all the FACT and the EVIDENCE.
