BGE Seeks Rate Hike
The utilities company cited a need to make essential upgrades to its gas and electric services.
Following the recent severe "derecho" that left many Baltimore County residents without power for days, Baltimore Gas and Electric is looking to raise its rates.
In a Friday statement, the utilities company announced that it filed with the Maryland Public Service Commission to increase its rates for gas and electric services for both residential and commercial customers.
According to BGE, the typical residential gas bill would increase by $4.62 a month and the typical electric bill would increase by $7.22. The company said this would amount to a 4.4 percent increase in total electric bills and 6.6 percent in total electric bills across all customer classes.
"We realize that any increase in our electricity and gas distribution rates can be a burden for our customers, particularly given today’s difficult economic times," said Kenneth W. DeFontes Jr., president and chief executive officer of BGE in the release. "The adjustments we have requested position BGE to continue to make essential upgrades, with an emphasis on modernizing our infrastructure for enhanced reliability and safety."
BGE reminds customers that they can better manage their bills through the company's BGE Smart Energy Savers Program.

I agree. During a 2 day outage when we had a blizzard 2 years ago, I called BGE during the first 30 minutes of outage because we "WERE" on their "special needs" list. Fiancee' has COPD. The woman that answered, after I told her we "are" on the list, said take him to the hospital! WTF kind of response was that. He needed his oxygen and I could see a $10,000 bill that insurance would not pay because of her "take him to the hospital" response. Therefore, we decided to not go thru the friggen paperwork (doctor has to verify need) again because they could care less about their customer. Just don't miss paying off the CEO and other execs their BIG bonuses. And, as you said, "shove it up O'Malley's you know what".

This is so irritating. BGE wants to raise prices to "modernize" their systems, and expect everyone to be supportive of that because so many of us recently suffered for days without power. But, maybe if their systems were already more modernized, we wouldn't have had to suffer as much. They're making money hand over fist and should be putting some of that money back into their business, keeping it up to date. I guess BGE just thinks we're all ripe for the picking.

People DO need to fight this just like they need to fight water fluoridation and many, many other things, but it's like people get upset, then settle down and just take it up the rear and complain about it. What has happened to people these days? It's like people just ultimately accept anything. FIGHT this.
Once again, what we need is to make advancements in SOLAR and WIND power, yes, that's right, using the sun and the wind along with back up generators and solar/wind batteries that run homes at night. When's the last time we had a sun outage (night time doesn't count for all those smart A's out there lol)? The sun always comes up, every day, without fail and the wind always blows. That is unlimited energy and while such a setup would be expensive, not having an electric bill and being off the grid would pay for itself very quickly. Matter of fact, if you did have solar and wind power and were still on the grid, but not using it, BGE would be paying YOU for the power you would be pumping into the grid. That is no lie, either.
Solar, wind and even hydroelectric devices. Those ARE the future. BGE is terrible with power outages. Really? It's 2012 and we still can't handle thunderstorms? We still have trees falling on power lines? Once again, WHERE IS THE ADVANCEMENT? Advancement in the US stopped over 10 years ago. Reason? Greed, simple as that. Neither big oil or BGE would relinquish their hold on us without a long FIGHT from the people.

The only REAL question is, are we finally angry enough to really, seriously fight for these things? Are we ready for a "revolution" in this country, hopefully not an armed or violent one? The middle class is slowly being squeezed into nothingness. This country is slowly becoming two categories of people. The rich and the poor, no middle class. Elect Romney and watch that situation get worse because he doesn't care about the poor and even SAID that himself. I'm sure the quote is on youtube somewhere. I swear, if that warmongering, elitist D-bag gets elected, the situation in this country will get worse in a hurry. I'd rather have four more years of Obama, actually, I'd rather have Ron Paul, but the media blacked him out as well as the election fraud and vote manipulation that took place throughout state elections last year. There is no hope in voting, the only solution isn't a good one. It's the one where people's back's finally hit the wall and they have nowhere or nothing else to do except revolt, probably violently considering everyone has guns these days (not me). I am really, really, really concerned about the future of this country. The people have been asleep for too long and need to wake the F (pardon my initialized french) UP. Before it's too late if it's not already. They don't care about us anymore, that should be obvious to anyone who pays the slightest bit of attention to anything these days. We've become so apathetic towards ourselves like we deserve it. Wake up!

I just got a notice that my budget billing is going down by $50 per month. With energy efficient appliances, which we're militantly encouraged to buy, most people are consuming less gas and electric. So basically what it is, is they've forced us to reduce our consumption, and now they're bellyaching because they're making less money as a result. What they tell us is: Consume less, pay less. But what they WANT is: Consume less, pay MORE. They're obviously trying to have it both ways. And with O'Smarmy in charge, they'll likely get exactly what they want.

Mike Fisher

The prices of Solar power are coming down, but still expensive. If you had $10,000 to spend, you could probably get a solar power system that would run a small house by itself with solar batteries and using grid power as backup power if you needed it.
And why have we abandoned things like windmills as being primitive and outdated? Wind is constant, pretty much. A nice solar set up and a couple small, high efficiency windmills and you have your own power plant. Of course, we should have already been to this point by now. Getting off the grid or, at least, reducing the need for grid power would be in the best interest of everyone. I think high powered solar panels are the best way to go. You can even have ones installed that will transfer heat to themselves to keep snow and ice off of them during snowy winters. This is all stuff we have the tech to do, but we don't because BGE has the grip of death on people. If the price of solar continues to drop, which it should, and panels get stronger, people will start investing in solar power and I think it's a good investment as is wind power. Windmills may not be the prettiest of things, but when they are spinning, they generate a lot of electricity. Wind energy is on the come back and solar is on the way up which means more jobs as well. If i EVER have the money, I will invest in such things to get off the grid. It's the future and it should already be the present.

It seems right now, the price of a wind turbine producing enough energy to power the average home is between $35-$50,000, which is around 100Kw of energy. Still out of people's price ranges, most people anyway, but how long before it paid for itself? It's free electricity and not only that, any excess power goes back into the grid which BGE will send you checks for. I think most people (just a guess) pay around $2,500 or more on electricity per year. Of course, the prices will have to come down some for wind turbines. If only these companies realized that if they made prices for high powered solar panels and wind turbines affordable for more people, they would sell like hotcakes, as they say. I think most people want OFF the grid, they want cleaner and more reliable energy. Bring down the prices and both these industries will take off like rockets. I'd put money on it.

The rates for electricity and gas are so ridiculous in Maryland, I am glad that I moved back to Pennsylvania. I lived in a 2 br, 1ba townhome in Cockeysville, MD which was approximately 700 sq ft and my bill would be over $100 about now. I moved to a 3 br, 2.5ba which is around 2000 sq ft and only paid $80 last month with this ridiculous heat wave. A bit of a difference, huh?
During the winter I could pay up to $260/month with BGE. Now I know I won't pay anything close to that, yet I will have equal to better service and live in a much bigger place. That's only because BGE's rates are so exorbitant. I also didn't tell you that I had to pay a $367 security deposit for BGE. Though, my rental office in MD didn't charge me a single penny for my security deposit. My utility companies here in PA, didn't charge me a cent for security deposit. So, I feel for you MD. BGE will think of any excuse so that they can price gouge their customers.

.. and the reason they can do that is 1: they are a monopoly, 2: people dont raise enough hell about it, 3: the alternatives are still too expensive and 4: because they can. People complain, but that's about it. BGE solves that by making their call numbers completely automated so you can't complain to anyone.

Big business is booming, we need to stand up and show these monopolies that we won't stand for it!
Mike Fisher
11:48 am on Monday, July 30, 2012
Angela, the only thing these big businesses understand is money. People would need to stop shopping at places like Walmart and BJ's, places that sell anything from car parts to groceries and start supporting local businesses instead. Go to a food store to stop instead of Walmart. Go to a local nursery or plant depot (like friendly farms, for example) for gardening needs, go to clothing stores to buy clothes. These superstores like Walmart are KILLING small businesses, so know what you do to get their attention? Stop shopping there, stop giving them your money. That's what gets their attention. Support local businesses, not these superstores who want the monopoly on everything. It's only a matter of time before we have Walmart gasoline filling stations too.
Boycott these superstores and support local businesses, that how you show them you won't stand for it anymore. With BGE, our alternatives are solar/wind energy, but with solar especially, you get what you pay for and after more research into wind energy, you wouldn't need as big of a turbine as I previously thought to run your home. Cheap, flat solar panels aren't the way to go. They make ones that actually sense where the sun is and point themselves at it for maximum energy. Wind turbines produce a ton of electricity and they don't even have to be spinning fast.
Alternatives, people, that's what we need more of and we need to use them.

Why do I keep getting email notices of new posts on blogs when the posts aren't even here?
Look, you guys have to stop with this "Dems vs. Repubs" stuff. Don't you guys see they are both on the same side? They are playing for the same team, all these stupid labels do is direct anger towards each other. Can't we stop it? It's so silly. Dems and Repubs are on the same side, they don't want progression and all you guys want to do is blame each other for everything. BOTH parties are the problem, matter of fact, the party system is the problem. I consider myself an Independent. I have looked up the definitions of conservative and liberal and find that both have good things about them, but some things I don't agree with at all and aren't even good for anyone. Why does everyone insist on blaming each other? It's the government you should direct your anger to, not each other. THEY are the ones ruining this country, but we are too busy hating each other to stop them. It's their plan all along, to divide us so we don't know what's going on while they pass bills in the middle of the night or on weekends when no one is paying attention.
The party system is a cancer to this country, but people are ridiculed for not "picking a side" and independents aren't even taken seriously. A president that is Independent? They'd never get coverage and hardly any (I)'s in congress. Reps and Dems are both killing this country because all you want to do is blame each other.

The REAL terrorists that we have to worry about are domestic, in our own government, the ones who have thrown the constitution out the window because it gets in the way of their plans. Look at what the TSA does to people at airports now? Is that constitutional? Government is involved in so many things it has no constitutional right to be involved with and with more government comes less freedom and less liberty along with more laws. Corporations have human rights now, you know that? These copyright bills are unconstitutional, the government is out of control and it's BOTH parties responsible. The party system is only there to divide people so much that we can't tell what's going on because we're too busy hating each other. Don't you people see they are both on the same side? People need to let go of this stuff because no matter what you are or what category you choose to put yourself into, we ALL have a common goal and that common goal is to FIX THIS COUNTRY. We can at least put aside our differences long enough to see that, right? Take the good things from the Dem side, the Repubs, the Libs and the Conservatives and keep all the things that make sense and get rid of everything else. ALl this infighting going on between our own people is only playing into their plan and making it easier to do whatever they want. We don't even have to declare war anymore, we just do what we want to do. BOTH parties are the problem, it's killing us. It's much easier to do if we're divided!

Republican is a individual of Republic of the people. We have gone from “republic” that everyday and common sense we are all given at birth is used by HU”mans” being equal. Civil war we went to a democracy of a Representative of choice. One who rules by himself of what he thinks what people wants-not what is in needed by the people. Then the next process in the state we are in Authoritarianism
Authoritarianism emphasizes arbitrary law rather than the rule of law, Authoritarian political systems may be weakened through "inadequate performance to demands of the people (select group of officials behind closed doors) sounds familiar? What going on today So what is next “despotism” has been applied pejoratively to a person, particularly a head of state or government, who abuses their power and authority to oppress their people, subjects or subordinates. “”Most want to return to a republic””. 1776 was the "beginning of vision they had of America" I hope this enlightened your thoughts. Yeah, I'd rather have the Constitution as the building block which it hasn't been for years. The founding documents were for the people and we don't matter to them anymore than those documents do. I look at the constitution not as a bible, which is a whole different discussion, but as a footer of a house. The framers had no idea of nuclear weapons let alone a country of 300 million people with issues they could not even begin to comprehend. Their rifles fired one musket ball at a time and we have murderers with 100 round magazines fring as fast as they can pull the trigger?
The corruption in our politics is in the money. Hundreds of millions of dollars to sway elections without even knowing who is paying the bill. It will destroy the Republic. Might take awhile, but it will happen..

That drecchio and many Baltimoreans know this, there weren't trees just down across wires there were trees from the house two doors up blown down on top of your wires in area of Towson,Dundalk and Parkville many trees totally healthy didn't fall straight down they snapped in half and blew twenty feet ensnaring lines. No one would EVER touched those trees in a trimming process because you wouldn't possibly think that would happen. Hey I'm an employee ,I would have told you, you were crazy if you tried to clear some of the damage I saw.I would accused us of being a totally environmental unfriendly ,profit grabbing monopoly.Because like most BGE employees I live in the neighborhoods that were slammed beyond belief. As a citizen I have to admit after the snow blizzards ,Irene ,then this BGE should do more .But after working through all of them and wanting my neighborhood as shady green as possible I REALLY would have been pissed if they cut down the trees that these events knocked down and we never had those events. It'll take 20 years to bury all lines, how long before they get to your neighborhood ?You going to want extra $200.00 a month on your bill and they don't even get to your neighborhood in your lifetime? Sorry Felt like it was time someone from the OTHER side Ranted!

Then, the process of burying all lines should have started a long time ago. The answer is natural energy, particularly the sun and the wind. That's what I want. You guys want to let overgrown trees grow into and around power lines significantly increasing the risk of power outages for their customers and you say it'll take 20 years to bury all the lines, then it's time for alternative energy, not BGE or nuclear power or anything of the sort. We already HAVE unlimited sources of energy and during storms, wind turbines wouldn't fail, you'd get more than enough power. We have the technology to be BEYOND what BGE offers us for electricity to power our homes and businesses and we SHOULD be beyond it and, IMO, need to be. It's time to move on to more reliable sources of energy, then you can keep all your trees and who cares if a 20mph gust of wind on a sunny day snaps a large tree branch in half and it knocks out power to customers for 12 hours. Grid power should be backup power. We have unlimited sources of clean energy, we should be using them.

BGE's request for a rate increase is for distribution charges. BGE already raised the price they charge for the energy they deliver. BGE's price for residential electricity supply is now 21 percent above competitive market prices and their price for natural gas supply, which BGE raised on Aug 1, is now 7.5% above market.
You can choose the energy company that supplies electricity and natural gas to you through BGE and get your energy at a lower price. BGE delivers it, but you pay less for it.
Here are the numbers -
BGE now charges residential (schedule R) customers 9.862 cents per kWh for the electricity supply portion of their service. Washington Gas Energy Services (WGES) will supply electricity through BGE to you for 7.8 cents per kWh.
The same for natural gas - BGE's current price for natural gas supply is 56.22 cents per therm. WGES will supply natural gas through BGE to you for 51 cents per therm.
To see your price options, go to www.wges.com . To get WGES' promotional pricing, you need to enter a promotional code. Here it is. Where it asks "New to WGES? Enter your promo code here" enter code " EAHOME-EA1016 ". The code will get you WGES' promotional pricing.
If you enroll your BGE accounts with WGES, BGE will continue to deliver your electricity and natural gas as always, respond to issues, and handle the billing as before. But you will pay less for it. There is no service interruption. Nothing is connected or disconnected.

Do you know what they are referring this business to? Do you know how many court cases are involved. I could have put up as ton of links on the subject and I did not. I'm just suggesting don't over do it.
