91-Year-Old Man Robbed by 'Landscapers'

The burglars posed as handymen to get inside of the victim's home.

Two men disguised as landscapers stole a safe containing cash, jewelry and documents from a 91-year-old Timonium man, police incident reports show.

One of the burglars approached the elderly man Tuesday at his home in the 100 block of Belmore Road. The suspect offered the man landscaping services while the burglar's partner went inside and stole the safe from the basement, at about 10:30 a.m.

The incident is similar in nature to a deception burglary carried out at the beginning of August when an elderly woman was also robbed by two men posing as landscapers.

The suspect descriptions in each case, however, do not match.

Deception burglaries have become a real issue in the Lutherville-Timonium area, where burglars are targeting an aging population.

We only provide descriptions when there are enough details in a police report to that could lead to someone reasonably identifying a suspect. In this particular case, there were not. When it comes to deception burglaries or anyone coming to your door for that matter, a homeowner or renter should always ask first to see a solicitor permit. - ND

Wouldn't want to offend anyone, would we?

We need to be vigilant of our neighbors, especially the elderly. Ask questions. Don't worry about offending anyone. You can always apologize. You know who doesn't look like they belong in our neighborhoods. Especially people posing as landscapers without any equipment.

Nick,

So everyone going door to door in the county is required to posess a solicitor permit? I was not aware of this. Can these folks be reported to the police for not posessing a permit?

Scott - Absolutely, 100% yes. If they come to your door trying to sell you something and do not have what they call a hucksters license, they can be reported to the police. They are also no allowed to come to your door after 5 p.m. or sundown, whichever comes first. This story should help shed more light on the situation: http://patch.com/A-jPjQ
